What Is a Ballooned Drawing? (Dimensional Inspection Explained)

If you’ve ever been handed a drawing covered in little numbered circles and asked to “balloon it,” or a customer has demanded a ballooned drawing with your parts, this guide explains exactly what that means, why it’s done, and how to produce one without hours of manual work.

What is a ballooned drawing?

A ballooned drawing (sometimes called a “bubbled” drawing) is an engineering drawing where every dimension and requirement is given its own number inside a balloon — a small circle, triangle or hexagon placed next to it. Characteristic 1, 2, 3, and so on.

Those numbers aren’t decoration. Each one links a feature on the drawing to a row in an inspection report, so anyone can see at a glance which requirements have been checked, what was measured, and whether each one passed.

In short: ballooning turns a drawing into a checklist you can inspect against and prove you inspected.

Why fabricators and inspectors use them

The whole point is traceability. When a customer asks “did you actually check this dimension?”, a ballooned drawing plus its report answers it precisely — balloon 14 was 25.05 mm, tolerance 25 ±0.1, accepted.

Common reasons you’ll be asked for one:

  • First Article Inspection (FAI) — proving the first part off a new setup meets every requirement before you run the batch.
  • Customer or quality-system requirement — many buyers (especially aerospace and automotive supply chains) require ballooned drawings as standard.
  • Internal QC — a clean, repeatable way to record dimensional checks and catch problems early.
  • Disputes — documented evidence of conformance protects you if a part is questioned later.

What actually gets ballooned

A “characteristic” is anything on the drawing that can be inspected. Typically you balloon:

  • Every dimension (lengths, diameters, hole positions, angles)
  • GD&T callouts (position, flatness, profile, etc.)
  • Tolerances and limits
  • Notes that state a requirement (material, finish, heat treatment, welding spec)
  • Weld symbols and surface-finish callouts

Each gets a unique number, and nothing should be missed — a skipped characteristic is a gap in your inspection.

How ballooning fits into an inspection report

The balloons are only half the job. Each number maps to a line in a dimensional report table that records, for every characteristic:

  • the requirement (nominal value + tolerance)
  • the actual measured value
  • the result (accept / reject)
  • often the instrument used and any notes

When every row is filled and within tolerance, the part is conforming. One out-of-tolerance reading and it’s flagged. That report — alongside the ballooned drawing — is your inspection record.

If you supply to aerospace or automotive, you’ll meet formal versions of this: FAI to AS9102 (aerospace) or PPAP (automotive). Both are, at their core, a ballooned drawing plus a structured report proving every characteristic was verified on a first-off part. Tips for clean ballooning

  • Number logically — follow the drawing in a consistent order (sheet by sheet, zone by zone) so nothing’s skipped.
  • Balloon every requirement, including notes and GD&T — not just the obvious dimensions.
  • On multi-sheet drawings, keep balloons tied to their sheet so the report stays organised.
  • Re-balloon (or check) after any drawing revision — requirements change.
  • Record the instrument and actual reading, not just “pass” — it’s far stronger evidence.
